QUEEN’S PARK — Toronto's green roof by-law helped to make Ontario a global leader in environmental construction, but the Doug Ford government quietly killed the mandate without public notice on the night the Blue Jays began their World Series bid.
Ontario NDP Shadow Minister for Environment, Conservation, and Parks Peter Tabuns held the Premier’s feet to the fire during today’s Question Period, demanding an explanation for the decision that will cost Ontarians both jobs and money.
“Toronto’s green roof program for new buildings saves money for residents and owners by cutting energy use,” said Tabuns.
“1,600 Ontario workers depend on this program for employment. Doug Ford is eliminating it. Why is he putting these people out of work?”
Many of the impacted jobs are situated in rural areas. Others are blue-collar jobs, such as landscapers and roofers.
“The Premier likes to claim he helps workers, but he is a jobs disaster,” added Tabuns. “When he gets rid of Ontario jobs, he hurts Ontario farmers and manufacturers.”
“Ford can claim whatever he wants, but we know the reality. Again — why is he putting Ontarians out of work?”
Now no longer mandatory, the green roof program has been hailed for its rainwater absorption and flood prevention capabilities, while also reducing heating and cooling bills. It inspired similar programs in London, Seoul, Sydney, Copenhagen, and Chicago.
New Democrats will continue fighting to protect and create Ontario jobs, while working to cut emissions and safeguard the province’s environment.
We're so happy to have you on the team. We'll be in touch soon.
