Bill 60 Passes: Ontario’s Housing Crisis Just Got Worse

QUEEN’S PARK – After the fears of millions of Ontarians were realized by Ford and his conservatives through the passing of Bill 60, a bill that makes it easier to evict tenants and lets corporate landlords hike rents even higher, NDP Shadow Minister for housing MPP Catherine McKenney (Ottawa Centre) released the following statement:

“Doug Ford’s Conservatives have rammed through yet another harmful bill: one that puts renters at greater risk and deepens Ontario’s housing crisis. Millions of Ontarians saw their fears realized today as this government decided that passing Bill 60, a bill that strips away protections, accelerates evictions, and hands more power to property management companies and corporations already driving rents through the roof, is an acceptable way to govern. This government is preying on Ontarians who are simply trying to keep a stable, affordable home.

“Instead of fixing the chaos they created at the Landlord and Tenant Board or building the public, non-profit and co-op homes people desperately need, the Conservatives are choosing to make life even more unaffordable and insecure for the very people they were elected to serve.”
